Exceptional Withdrawals

Students who experience an unexpected or unforeseen situation, including a physical health, mental health, sudden familial loss, and/or other unique life event, may be eligible for an Exceptional Withdrawal.

Eligibility for an Exceptional Withdrawal includes:

  • Completed application,
  • Supporting documentation from professional,
  • Indication that event was not previously known to student,
  • Evidence of treatment received during semester of requested withdrawal, and/or
  • Feedback from faculty/academic advisor during impacted semester

Students must have their completed application package submitted to the Care Services team within 150-days from the last day of the impacted semester. Final Exceptional Withdrawal decisions must be processed by the University by 180-days after the last day of the semester. Exceptional Withdrawals operate on a strict deadline based on policy from the U.S. Department of Education. No exceptions will be granted outside of the deadline window.

All Exceptional Withdrawals must follow the process outlined in Withdrawals for Exceptional Circumstances Policy. (2.1120P).

Types of Exceptional Withdrawals

Physical Health

Applications related to physical health will require information related to the medical condition, any diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, etc. and how this has impacted their ability to perform academically.

Mental Health

Applications related to mental health will require information related to a new diagnosis or exacerbation of an existing or known condition that occurred during the requested semester and how this has impacted their ability to perform academically.

Unique Life Event

Applications related to the sudden and unexpected loss of an immediate family member or unique life event (i.e. victimization) will require information related to the event and formal/professional documentation to verify the situation and how this has impacted their ability to perform academically.

Overview of the Process

Before the Process

  • Speak with faculty members to determine if other options are available.
  • Withdrawal from all courses for which they wish to pursue an Exceptional Withdrawal (though this is not required).
  • Review other potential impacts with offices on campus: Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Student Financial Services

Submitting Your Application

It is highly recommended for students to thoroughly review all information and requirements of the Exceptional Withdrawal process prior to applying. This includes attending an Information Session, connecting with faculty/advisors, Financial Aid, Housing & Residence Life, Dining Services, etc. prior to submitting an exceptional withdrawal application.

Application Review

  • Only completed Exceptional Withdrawal application packages (i.e. application and required supporting documentation) will be forwarded to the Exceptional Withdrawal Committee for their review and determination of eligibility.
  • The Exceptional Withdrawal process may take approximately ten to twelve weeks to complete a full review. Applications are reviewed in the order they are determined to be fully complete by a Care Services staff member.
  • All Exceptional Withdrawal updates and correspondence will be directed to the student’s 成人大片email account.

Post Exceptional Withdrawal Process

We encourage students to be thoughtful in their time away from campus and to work on resolving the situation that necessitated the Exceptional Withdrawal prior to their return. Students who are registered for future courses, not included within the Exceptional Withdrawal application, will remain fee and grade liable for those courses.
