成人大片students awarded prestigious Gilman Scholarship to travel abroad
Three students from the 成人大片 have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, enabling them to pursue study abroad programs this summer across Europe.
The Gilman Scholarship, funded by the U.S. Department of State, helps Pell Grant recipients' study or intern abroad, building language and cultural skills key to national security and economic growth.
Allison Ashby is a junior double majoring in psychology and criminal justice. She is traveling to the United Kingdom and Scotland as part of an interdisciplinary study abroad program focused on education, psychology and social work. Ashby is creating a video about her trip showing that studying abroad can be accessible for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. A flyer will be posted in the 成人大片Student Accessibility Center with a QR code for students to view.
“I’m hard of hearing myself so I want to advocate for people like me and show how studying abroad can be accessible,” said Ashby.
Jamie Douglas is a sophomore majoring in international business and minoring in marketing. Douglas is no stranger to traveling internationally, having moved from New York to Jamaica when she was two, before eventually moving 10 years later to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she finished high school. This summer, she is visiting France as part of a cross-disciplinary, faculty-led study abroad program designed to introduce students to the opportunities and challenges involved in developing strategies and for implementing communication, marketing and business plans for global markets. With a passion for learning how the culture of a location affects the area’s businesses, Douglas will study how the French culture impacts the real-estate profession.
“I always wanted to visit France and look forward to studying the architecture, learning about business and experiencing the atmosphere,” said Douglas.
Thu Ky Nguyen, a senior majoring in international business with double minors in leadership and business management, is expanding her knowledge on global businesses by traveling to France during the second half of the summer. Having moved to the US from Vietnam six years ago, Nguyen is looking forward to exploring Le Havre and Paris for four weeks while studying courses in international business and leadership.
“I was so excited to learn that I received the Gilman scholarship,” Nguyen said. “This is such a great and powerful opportunity to be able to study, have fun and engage with another country.”
